Free pattern: Captain Cat-Battler the Scurvy Catnip Mouse

27 May

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarn! Me hearties! The notorious Captain Cat-Battler is a veteran of cat vs mouse conflict. Since the dawn of time, rodents and their feline foe have pitted their wits against one another. Captain Cat-Battler is a handmade hero of mousekind, keeping the cats of the world on their furry toes with his cunning and his defiant squeak.

The Cap'n: don't be acallin' 'im a bilge rat...

Captain Cat-Battler was designed specially for Battersea Dogs & Cats Home and their new Cat Knit project. The Battersea Home is one of my favourite London charities, living with five cats myself (three of which are rescue moggies), so I am pleased to be able to help bring on some purring by donating the pattern exclusively to them in honour of their new crafty initiative. Such a cool cat cause.

The idea is simple:

Battersea’s cattery is preparing to be inundated with cats and kittens this summer, the charity is calling upon knitters and crafters across the UK to make knitted catnip mice to help keep Battersea’s whiskered residents entertained while they wait for new homes.”

The pattern is free but if you do use it, please donate to the Home; send a mouse to befriend lonely cats waiting for new owners; or even better, adopt a cat to go with your mouse. And remember to spread the word about the good work the Home is doing for our four-legged friends.

Useful Pirate Mouse-keeping Tips

  • Keep watch: Be sure to keep an eye on the Captain when there be precious cheeses or gold doubloons about. He’ll plunder unguarded booty afore ye know it.
  • Catnip cologne: Wild cat off the port bow! Captain Cat-Battler is oft spied asportin’ a catnip pouch about his scurvy person. The catnip stink be havin’ a strange effect on his foes, like a tot o’ good rum. Makes ‘em easier for him t’ conquer ‘em!
  • Cat-battling: Captain Cat-Battler won’t be harmin’ your cat. He’ll just keep ‘em amused. Every cat be needin’ a bit o’ swashbuckling to keep ‘em happy.

(Huge thanks to my proof-reading Twitter powder monkeys Karen at the fab Scrap-e-Do, Kat and Cal)

(The Captain was inspired by my undying love for the kooky coolness of Tim Burton and Alex Milway’s Mousehunter books (a tri-cornered hat-tip to the magnificent Captain Mousebeard). Read them! They’re even better than a tot o’ rum on a stormy night.)
